Court remands man for indulging in hard drugs

A Jimeta Area Court Yola, on Friday ordered the remand of a 19-year-old man Sulieman Halilu at the Jimeta correctional center until January 22 for indulging in hard drugs.

Halilu of Jimeta town, Yola is standing trial for extortion and theft before the Presiding Judge, Al’amin Diya.

Diya ordered that the accused be remanded at the correctional center after pleading guilty to the crime.

“The case has been adjourned to Jan.22 to enable the complainants present witnesses for corroboration of evidence with the plea of the defendant and possible summary trial.

“Meanwhile the defendant is hereby remanded at the correctional center,” the Judge stated.

Earlier, a direct criminal complaint was issued on Jan.16 by two complainants, Saleh Halilu, the defendant’s biological brother and Zainab Halilu, the defendant’s biological mother.

The complainants alleged that the defendant is a drunkard, addicted to hard drugs and had once been convicted for the same crime.

They said that anytime the defendant takes the drugs, he steals household items, threatens their lives and use abusive words especially on the second complainant.

The complainants however, admitted that all efforts made to discourage the defendant from such criminal activity had proven abortive.

They further suggested that the actions of the defendant amounted to extortion and theft contrary to section 282 and 276 of the penal code law of Adamawa state 2018.

The complainants urged the court to take cognisance of the crime and punish the defendant accordingly.
