Sokoto State High Court has granted bail to Dr Abubakar Alkali, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Petroleum and Gas Engineering at Baze University.

Alkali was arrested on allegations of supporting the #EndBadGovernance protests and had been held by the Department of State Services (DSS) for the past three weeks.

A source told SaharaReporters on Thursday that the Sokoto State High Court had granted bail to the lecturer.

“Dr. Alkali, the Baze University lecturer has just been granted bail by Sokoto State High Court,” a lawyer close to the case told SaharaReporters on Thursday.

The source commended the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), the NBA Citizens’ Liberties Committee, and the Sokoto Branch of the NBA for their support and intervention in the matter.

Alkali’s lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, raised the alarm over his client’s detention by the DSS in a Facebook post on Saturday, September 14, 2024.

“Dr Abubakar Alkali, senior lecturer, department of petroleum and gas engineering, faculty of engineering, Baze University, was abducted by the DSS three weeks ago and taken to Sokoto State for supporting the End Bad Governance protest. He has been in custody since then,” he wrote.
