The acting National Chairman of People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Iliya Damagum, has described the resignation of its 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, from the party as a familiar pattern, saying the party expects Atiku’s return.
Damagum stated this on Friday at the Government House, Bauchi State, while responding to questions from journalists on the exit of Atiku and others from the party.
He said that the party seems to be taking a wait-and-see approach and now expecting Atiku to potentially return in the future.
“Well it is expected because this is not the first time and I don’t think it will be the last time. We are still expecting him any moment from now,” Damagum said.
Atiku Abubakar had resigned from the party Wednesday in a letter addressed to the Chairman of Jada 1 Ward in Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
Atiku had cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for his exit from the PDP.
The former Vice President also expressed disappointment with the current direction of the party, which he said had strayed from the vision and principles upon which it was founded.
Former presidential aspirant, Dele Momodu, had also announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and officially defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
In a letter dated July 17, Momodu cited the PDP’s alleged hijack by antidemocratic forces as the reason for his departure.
“The party has been unarguably hijacked by antidemocratic forces, from within and outside, in broad daylight,” Momodu stated.
He expressed his decision to abandon the party, describing it as a “carcass” taken over by undemocratic elements.
