A 30-year-old man, Emmanuel Okpara, has allegedly confessed to killing his girlfriend, Chinyere, in Enugu State on September 19, 2026.

Okpara made the alleged confession in a video recording in which he narrated how he met the deceased, how their relationship began and what he claimed happened before her death.

According to him, he first met Chinyere on Facebook in 2023 while he was living in Nekede, Imo State. He said he later relocated to Enugu State in December 2025, while Chinyere was serving as a National Youth Service Corps member in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

He explained that after completing her NYSC programme and returning to Enugu in March 2026, the two met again and subsequently began a relationship.

Okpara said Chinyere later visited him at his residence. It was during one of their meetings, according to his account, that he told her he could cure people suffering from sexually transmitted diseases, including hepatitis, HIV and syphilis.

He alleged that the statement immediately triggered an argument between them, with Chinyere accusing him of being responsible for infecting her with HIV.

According to Okpara, the disagreement escalated into a physical confrontation. He claimed that during the fight, Chinyere used a pistol to hit him.

He said he was able to take the firearm from her and subsequently used it to strike her on the head. He claimed that the blow caused her to collapse.

Okpara further alleged that he thereafter used a machete to inflict severe injuries on the woman, including cutting her wrist and causing deep wounds to her head and neck.

The suspect also claimed that he was under the influence of hard drugs at the time of the incident.

Following the alleged killing, Okpara said he wrapped Chinyere’s body in nylon and kept it inside his apartment.

He explained that he was overwhelmed by fear and did not know what to do after the incident. According to him, he remained inside the apartment with the body for several days.

The situation reportedly came to light after neighbours became suspicious because of a strong odour coming from the apartment.

Okpara said that three days after the incident, neighbours broke into his apartment after noticing the stench and discovered him inside with the decomposing body of the deceased.

He also admitted to damaging Chinyere’s mobile phone after her death, allegedly to prevent anyone from contacting her or tracing her whereabouts.

The circumstances surrounding the alleged killing have generated concern, particularly because of the violent nature of the injuries described by the suspect.

Okpara’s account, however, remains an allegation and forms part of the circumstances surrounding the ongoing investigation. His claims about the events leading to Chinyere’s death, including the alleged argument over HIV infection, the use of a pistol and his assertion that he was under the influence of hard drugs, would require independent investigation and corroboration by law enforcement authorities.

The case also highlights concerns surrounding domestic and relationship-related violence, particularly where disagreements escalate into physical confrontation.

The discovery of Chinyere’s body reportedly followed the neighbours’ intervention after they noticed the unusual odour from the suspect’s residence. The subsequent discovery brought the incident to public attention and led to the arrest and questioning of the suspect.

Authorities are expected to establish the full circumstances surrounding Chinyere’s death, including the events immediately preceding the alleged attack, the cause of death and the sequence of events after the incident.

The investigation is also expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the firearm allegedly used during the confrontation and the source of the machete said to have been used to inflict the injuries.

As investigations continue, the suspect’s video confession is likely to form part of the evidence considered by investigators, subject to proper verification and other evidence gathered in the course of the inquiry.
