The Forum of South-East Academic Doctors (FOSAD) warmly commends the Governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Nwifuru, for his humane and thoughtful decision to reverse the suspension of the two Ebonyi teachers involved in the recently circulated viral video that generated widespread public concern and debate.
As a body committed to the promotion of education, intellectual freedom, professionalism, and social justice, FOSAD considers the governor’s intervention a commendable demonstration of responsive leadership, compassion, and statesmanship. The decision reflects an understanding that disciplinary measures within the education sector should not only uphold standards and accountability but also embrace fairness, empathy, and opportunities for correction and reconciliation.
We acknowledge that the incident attracted public attention and raised legitimate concerns regarding conduct within the school system. However, the reversal of the suspension sends a positive message that governance must always balance discipline with humanity. It equally underscores the importance of due process, dialogue, and the protection of the dignity of teachers who continue to serve under difficult conditions across the country.
Teachers remain critical stakeholders in national development and deserve institutional support, encouragement, and continuous professional engagement rather than actions that may permanently damage morale and public confidence in the teaching profession. The governor’s decision therefore demonstrates maturity in leadership and a willingness to listen to public opinion and stakeholder concerns.
FOSAD also urges education authorities in Ebonyi State and across Nigeria to prioritize teacher welfare, regular training, ethical reorientation, and improved learning environments capable of enhancing professionalism and productivity in schools. Sustainable educational reform cannot be achieved through punitive measures alone but through constructive policies that strengthen both accountability and support systems.
We further encourage educators to uphold the highest standards of professional conduct, discipline, and responsibility in the discharge of their duties, recognizing the enormous influence they wield in shaping the character and future of younger generations.
The Forum remains committed to supporting policies and initiatives that advance educational excellence, intellectual freedom, and responsible leadership in the South-East and Nigeria at large.
