A woman identified as Mrs. Achue Lovelyn Makia has died from postpartum haemorrhage after delivering a set of twins at home due to the absence of a functional medical facility in Balegete Community, Obanliku Local Government Area of Cross River State.

It was gathered that Mrs. Makia suffered severe bleeding after childbirth and died while being transported to a neighbouring community in search of proper medical care.

Reacting to the tragic incident on Monday, January 26, the Member representing Obanliku/Obudu/Bekwarra Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Peter Akpanke, expressed deep sorrow over the loss and disclosed that he had reached out to the Director General of the Cross River State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr. Vivian Otu, to appeal for the urgent establishment of a sustainable healthcare centre in Balegete Community.

In a statement, Akpanke said his attention was drawn to the “tragic and unfortunate incident” that occurred in Balegete Community, Becheve Ward, Obanliku Local Government Area, where Mrs. Achue Lovelyn Makia died of postpartum haemorrhage while seeking medical attention after childbirth.

While mourning the loss, the lawmaker noted that the deceased left behind a set of newborn twins who are in urgent need of care and support.

“As her representative, I have reached out to the Director General of the Cross River State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr. Vivian Otu, to draw her attention to this unfortunate incident and to appeal for the urgent establishment of a more sustainable healthcare centre in the remote Balegete Community, as well as other underserved communities across our federal constituency, to prevent a recurrence of such tragedies,” the statement said.

Akpanke further disclosed that, as an immediate intervention, he had directed his team, led by his Personal Assistant and Legislative Aide, to evacuate the surviving babies from Balegete Community to Sacred Heart Hospital, Obudu, for proper medical attention.

He also approved a financial support of Five Hundred Thousand Naira (N500,000) for the family to assist with their immediate needs.

He concluded by offering prayers for the repose of the deceased’s soul, saying, “May the soul of Achue Lovelyn Makia, and the souls of all the faithful departed, rest in perfect peace.”
