Members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area on Saturday defied a heavy downpour to participate in the party’s highly anticipated congress, which produced new executives and delegates across the 11 wards of the local government.
The congress, which was monitored by officials of the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), was described as peaceful, transparent, and in full compliance with electoral guidelines. The Returning Officer, who represented the party’s national headquarters, supervised the proceedings.
According to observers, the exercise witnessed a large turnout of party faithful who braved the rains to demonstrate their loyalty and commitment to the PDP. Despite weather challenges, delegates conducted themselves in an orderly manner, reflecting what party stakeholders described as a renewed sense of unity and determination within the PDP family in Amuwo Odofin.
Speaking after the exercise, the Returning Officer dismissed claims of internal division within the party in the local government, stressing that the congress process proved otherwise. “I observed a unity of purpose. If there was division, it would have manifested during the congress. But when motions were raised, the ‘ayes’ were 100 percent, and the ‘nays’ were zero. The issue of factions simply does not apply here,” he stated.
Party members and supporters also echoed similar sentiments, noting that the seamless nature of the congress confirmed the collective resolve of the PDP to strengthen its grassroots structure ahead of future elections.
One ward leader expressed optimism that the newly elected executives would build on the momentum generated by the congress to mobilize wider support for the party in Amuwo Odofin. “The level of participation today shows that our people are ready. Rain did not stop us, nothing will stop us from reclaiming our rightful place in the politics of Lagos State,” the leader said.
Observers noted that the congress reflected a disciplined approach to internal democracy within the PDP, contrasting claims of rancor and disunity that have sometimes been associated with party politics at the grassroots. The presence of security agencies and electoral officials was also seen as reinforcing the credibility of the process.
