Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have passed a vote of confidence in Mojisola Meranda as the substantive speaker of the house.
The lawmakers expressed their support for Meranda following rumours of her possible resignation.
The resolution was passed after Oladipo Ajomale, a member representing Oshodi-Isolo constituency 2, moved a motion to affirm the Assembly’s trust in Meranda’s leadership during Monday’s plenary session.
In a viral video, Ajomale stated that Meranda was elected by the lawmakers in accordance with the Nigerian constitution and other relevant laws.
“We have elected you, who we believe in as the speaker. We will display here live, clear for people to see that this decision was done by members of the State House Assembly, duly elected.
“It is on this note that I want to ask that members, please, if you can affirm your vote of confidence in Madam Speaker, kindly raise up your hands. Can we please stand,” Ajomale asked his co-lawmakers who all complied as seen in the video.
The House adjourned the plenary indefinitely after the vote of confidence was passed.
SaharaReporters earlier reported how the Lagos State House of Assembly’s leadership crisis took another turn on Monday following an invasion by the Department of State Services (DSS).
However, despite the tension, Meranda presided over the legislative session on Monday, laying claim to her position as the Speaker.
This came shortly after heavily armed operatives of the DSS and the Nigerian police stormed the complex to seal the offices of the Speaker, Deputy Speaker and the Clerk of the House.
The leadership crisis followed the recent removal of Mudashiru Obasa as the Assembly Speaker.
