The Enugu State Police Command has reportedly apprehended Chukwuka Nwatu, identified as the notorious criminal responsible for terrorising Oruku community in Nkanu East Local Government Area.
According to sources, Nwatu’s crimes include burning the houses of his opponents. He had previously been arrested and released.
A community source told SaharaReporters on Tuesday that the suspect who had been arrested for committing several criminal activities in the community and later released was re-arrested on Monday when he attacked a neighbouring community – Aguikpa Autonomous community.
Giving details on how he was arrested, the source said: “The caretaker committee chairman of Oruku community, who is also a native doctor engaged him and some other guys to be his security guard. So he had problems with the Aguikpa Autonomous community which is a neighbouring community.
“On Monday he sent his guys which Chukwuka Nwatu was part to attack Aguikpa Autonomous community for destroying his shrine in a land which he claimed he had bought.
“To their greatest shock, when they got to the community, Aguikpa youths overpowered and dispossessed them of their gun and called the police to pick them up.
“AK-47 bullets were recovered in a bag where he was doing Point of Sale (POS) business,” the source said.
Meanwhile, efforts made by SaharaReporters to get the police reaction were unsuccessful as the Command’s spokesman DSP Daniel Ndukwe didn’t answer his calls or reply to a text message sent to him.
