The Cholera outbreak recorded in some local government areas of Lagos State has compelled the Agege Local Government Area of the state to suspend food vendors in schools to prevent the cholera outbreak in the council area.

The chairman of the council, Ganiyu Egunjobi, who made this known to journalists on Friday said the council has also initiated a rigorous sensitisation campaign to prevent the disease in its communities.

Egunjobi said, “We have suspended all school food vendors to ensure the safety of the pupils and students.”

According to the council chairman, efforts have been made to educate market stakeholders and schools via radio to prevent the outbreak within the community.

He said, “We have informed both pupils and students on radio stations to bring their own food to ensure their safety from cholera. This development will allow us to detect and prevent outbreaks in our community.”

He noted that schools were visited and inspected to ensure the children were in good health and a clean environment.

Egunjobi further said that market traders in various communities were enlightened and sensitized to maintain environmental hygiene to prevent the outbreak.

He said, “We are using various means, including landlord associations, to advise our people on ensuring hygiene in preparing food and drinks.

“We urge residents to familiarize themselves with precautionary measures against the deadly cholera outbreak.”

Lagos State government has announced that it has recorded 350 suspected cases, 17 confirmed cases and 15 deaths in the Cholera outbreak which has been reported in 30 out of 36 states of the federation.
