The Peoples Democratic Party House of Reps candidate for Ajeromi Ifelodun constituency, Hon Francis Barthlomew Chima aka OmoBarca has felicitated workers in Nigeria on the occasion of May Day celebration.
May Day also known as Labour Day or International Workers Day is celebrated on May 1 every year to honour the working class across the world. It is celebrated as a national public holiday in many countries.
In Nigeria, May Day as a holiday was first declared by the People Redemption Party (PRP) Government of Kano State in 1980 and it became a national holiday on May 1, 1981.
OmoBarca who is also an employer of labour used the opportunity to celebrate workers and the struggle they pass through in Nigeria. He stated that without the diligence and dedication of workers, Nigeria would seize to function as a nation.
“Workers are the engine room of development for any country in the world. No country will succeed without the input of workers. I appreciate the labour of love and service to humanity of my staff and all the workers in Nigeria both in public and private sector. Let me encourage workers especially those in the civil service to continue the good work while I appeal to the government to increase remuneration and improve working condition in Nigeria. Happy Workers Day!” OmoBarca said in the press release.
In recent times, workers in Nigeria have suffered job losses, insecurity, economic hardship, high inflation and other calamities.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have accused governors for not paying adequate attention to the welfare of workers in their states.
