At least 340 cases of women beating up their husbands were recorded in Lagos State in the last 12 months, according to a government report.
This was made known by the Executive Secretary, of Lagos Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, DSVA, Mrs Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, in a quarterly report of the agency.
She added that the number of males reporting domestic abuse had doubled in recent years.
Between September 2022 and July 2023, 340 males reported incidences of domestic violence perpetrated by their wives, according to Vivour-Adeniyi.
She said the agency “is currently handling the cases with the aim to find an amicable resolution.”
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government, through the Joint Task Force on Implementation of the Executive Order on Safeguarding and Child Protection has commenced monitoring and assessment across the six education districts in the state.
Members of the Joint Task Force comprised of top-level representatives of the Office of Education Quality Assurance, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Youth and Social Development, Lagos State Safety Commission, State Universal Basic Education Board, Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency and the Child Protection Network.
According to Vivour-Adeniyi, the monitoring effort, which started on October 31, 2023, at Lagos City College, Sabo-Yaba, has so far involved over 200 schools in Education areas 4 and 5, with over 90 schools visited to assess and measure compliance in those areas.
“On-the-spot assessments were conducted at the schools to confirm the practical implementation of the policy and identify strengths and areas for improvement. The aim of the monitoring exercise is to ascertain the level of adoption and implementation of the Executive Order across all six education districts in Lagos State,” Vivour-Adeniyi was quoted by Vanguard Newspaper.
Mr Kamaldeen Akodu, a representative of the Office of Education Quality Assurance, also elaborated on the need for schools to implement precautionary measures to maintain a safe learning environment during the engagement.
Similarly, a Ministry of Youth and Social Development representative, Mr. Jubril Yakub explained the purpose of the exercise to school officials, emphasising that it was not punitive but rather corrective.
