The presidential candidate of Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi has charged Nigerians to scrutinize and vote for candidates who can be trusted with leadership.
Obi disclosed this during a live interview program on Arise Television on Monday morning.
One of hosts of the program, Dr Reuben Abati regretted that all the presidential candidates are campaigning with same issues and same promises to Nigerians.
Obi told him that, what makes the difference is about who can be trusted:
“This election is about trust. We all are promising the same things but can we look at the past, the antecedents of the individuals and things they promised in the past. How did he deliver the promises he made? Who among this people can we say have the character, the competence, capacity and the commitment to at least do what he or she is saying? That is what differentiates us. People have promised to make one dollar one naira in the past. Today one dollar is almost N800. Nobody is talking. Let the people come and talk instead of written manifestos and documents. People promise what they cannot deliver. In Britain, they are not asking about where contestants come from or their background. They are asking about competence and what they can do. What this man promised, can he do it? In UK, they don’t care if the man is from Nigeria or Ghana, they just want to save Britain. They care about the future of Nigeria. Come and tell us what you can do by yourself, not through a spokes person. It is only in Nigeria that we campaign through people.”
Obi reiterated his commitment to move Nigeria from consumption to production so that Nigeria can feed herself.
He said his first step as president will be to ensure that Nigeria is self-sufficient in food production.
“First, you have to feed yourself. If countries like India as large as they are, can feed themselves, we can do that in Nigeria. India, Pakistan, Vietnam are self sufficient in agriculture. The greatest asset we have is the vast uncultivated land we have in the north of Nigeria.”
