The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of the day and was confirmed in an official statement released by the Diocesan Chancellor, Rev Fr Charles Ndubuisi. According to the statement, Fr Udogu collapsed during the game and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital. Despite urgent medical efforts, he could not be revived.

“With faith in the resurrection of the Lord, the Catholic Diocese of Awka announces the demise of our brother priest, Rev Fr Anthony Udogu, whose sudden death occurred in the early hours of today,” the Diocese stated.

Until his death, Fr Udogu served as the Parish Priest of St Francis of Assisi in Awka and was also the Dean of Awka Deanery II. He was known for his devotion to the Church, strong leadership, and passionate commitment to the spiritual and social growth of his parishioners.

The Diocese extended heartfelt condolences to his family, the faithful of his parish, and the broader Catholic community. Plans for his burial are currently underway, with further details expected to be released in due course.

“May the soul of Rev Fr Anthony Nnaemeka Udogu rest in the bosom of the Lord,” the Diocese’s statement concluded, as tributes continue to pour in from clergy and laity alike.
