Libyan authorities have arrested a local driver attempting to smuggle four Nigerian women and three children through the Ashkada-Sabha Triangle Gate in southern Libya.
The arrest was made during a routine inspection by police officers who intercepted the vehicle transporting four undocumented female migrants and three children, all of Nigerian nationality.
The suspect, identified only as Y.A.M.Y., born in 1993, reportedly offered a bribe to the officers at the checkpoint in a failed bid to evade arrest.
However, the officers refused the bribe and apprehended him.
Migrant Rescue Watch confirmed the incident in a statement released on Monday, noting that all the individuals involved have been transferred to the Al-Shatti Security Directorate for further investigation.
The statement read, “Police during inspection at the Ashkada-Sabha Triangle Gate thwarted an attempted human smuggling and arrested a Libyan driver (‘Y. A. M. Y.’, born in 1993) who transported 4 undocumented #migrant females and 3 children of Nigerian nationality.
“During inspection the driver offered a bribe to police officers in an attempt to evade accountability. All transferred to Al-Shatti Security Directorate pending referral to competent judicial authorities.”
