The past Chief of Staff to Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, Chief Okey Ahaiwe on Saturday emerged winner of the rerun Governorship Primary election of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State for the March 11 election.
Ahaiwe scored 496 votes to win the re run PDP primary following the death of the former candidate, Prof Uche Ikonne.
Edo State Governor, Goodwin Obaseki, who chaired the PDP Election committee, announced the result of the primary on Saturday after votes were counted.
According to him, Ahaiwe polled a total of 469 to beat other aspirants.
He said that 516 voters were accredited while 12 votes were declared invalid.
Mayor Lucky Igbokwe scored 12 votes, Rt Hon Ude Oko Chukwu 12 votes and Sampson Uka Orji -11 votes.
SaharaReporters had reported that Prof Uchenna Ikonne’s son Dr Uche-Ikonne Chikezie on January 25, 2023 announced the death of his father.
According to the younger Ikonne, the PDP governorship candidate died around 4am on January 25, 2023 after a brief illness. He died at the National Hospital Abuja.
“He was recovering after taking proper treatment in the United Kingdom but relapsed a few days ago leading to multiple cardiac arrests for which he didn’t recover from.
“Further details and arrangements would be made known to the public after deliberations and meetings are made within the family,” the statement partly read.
The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba told Channels Television that the party would issue a statement after receiving briefing from the state chapter.
Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, in a statement, had commiserated with the family of the deceased and directed that all flags in the state be lowered.
